A Life in Full Color: Meet Barbara

At 97 years young, Barbara is living proof that it’s never too late to discover a passion. Although she had enjoyed pencil sketching since childhood, it wasn’t until the age of 80 that she took her first watercolor class while living in Brookridge, Florida that she took her first watercolor class. Taught by a local artist, those lessons opened a new creative chapter in her life.

Barbara quickly fell in love with watercolor painting, learning techniques both in person and online, including from renowned watercolor artist Joe Cartwright. Today, she creates beautiful wall art, personalized birthday and holiday cards, and even crocheted pieces. Her cards are cherished by residents and staff alike, each one made with thought, care, and the goal of making someone smile. “I just want people to feel happy and know they’re thought of,” she says.

Her creativity extends beyond painting. Barbara has sewn, baked, and even crocheted hats for newborns at local hospitals. She stays active and engaged, often working on her cards well in advance; she’s already finished most of her Christmas cards for this year!

Barbara’s talents and kindness have left a lasting mark on our community. Residents and team members alike treasure the handmade cards she gives, and many proudly display them in their rooms and offices.

Before moving here three years ago, Barbara spent 30 years in Florida, where she played golf well into her 90s, often three or four days a week, and even organized tournaments. Her secret to staying young? Staying active, creative, and never being afraid to try something new.

Barbara’s advice to aspiring artists is simple yet profound: “Have patience and just keep going. It’s only paint and paper, if you make a mistake, try again.”

Barbara, thank you for inspiring us all with your creativity, generosity, and zest for life.
